The Kainui ICTPD Cluster comprises seven small rural Primary Schools near Palmerston North. This year we set up a competition for each class to produce an 'Our School' Digital Story. This was to provide an incentive for all staff to get involved with a practical ICT tool. We chose Photostory as it is a programme that is accessable to staff at all levels of expertise and allows for production of a simple 'show and tell' through to a sophisticated movie quality production.
This session will be suitable for anyone even if you have never considered digital storytelling or Photostory. You will be given a range of ideas and the experience of our Lead Teachers and will complete your own story. We will cover issues that you may encounter and the skills that can help you. You should bring a basic digital camera. |

At Grasslands Kindergarten we believe that partnerships with parents are essential to maintaining a culture of learning for children. It is this philosophy that has led us to our investigation into e-portfolios as a means of sharing important experiences and learning in children's lives.
In this presentation we will show the ways in which e-portfolios have personalized and further strengthened relationships with families and extended whanau. Evidence (interviews parents and extended family) has indicated that the immediacy of access and the visual versatility of e-portfolios make them particularly user-friendly to many families. As teachers we have noticed that our interactions with children are enhanced because of the information exchanged through the e-portfolios.
Our presentation will include strategies for setting up e-portfolios and what we have learnt along the way. This session will be of value to early childhood and primary participants who are interested in increasing parent/whanau/community engagement. Grasslands Kindergarten is currently participating in the MOE funded ECE ICT Professional Learning Pilot Programme.

Carlyle and Irongate Kindergartens are two of seven centres in a one-year MOE funded ECE ICT Professional Learning Pilot being undertaken in the Hawkes Bay. The framework being used for the investigation is Nga Arohaehae Whai Hua/Self-Review Guidelines for Early Childhood Education.
Carlyle Kindergarten looked at how they could encourage an interest in literacy through ICT. The notion of 'literacy' has now grown into an awareness and culture of providing multi-literacies that engage today's digital children.
Irongate Kindergarten explored the use of email and loan camera to strengthen reciprocal relationships with home. Hear from parent interviews the impact of these ICT practices on extending literacy in the home. The teachers will also describe how they have been able to build on these stories and resources coming from homes and what happens for the children's learning as a result.

The NZ Curriculum recognises the interreatlated nature of curriculum and the nature of learning and includes a section on pedagogy. In my oft used language this is a recognition that what we think it is important for students to learn will only be pwerful if it is learnt in a powerful way. So what constitue powerful learning? How do we know it when we see it? How do we design for it? This highly interactive session is designed to involve you in examining those questions in relation to your own teaching.

| Abstract |
In educational settings the growth and development of children, and of adults, are vitally linked. So, what practices weave together enthusiastic and engaged learning for children and professional development for teachers? The environment must encourage a sense of wonder and attention to details, with an eagerness to embrace new and unanticipated questions. Children and teachers must have opportunities to play and build relationships with ideas and other inquirers. As they watch children's investigations, teachers, too, become researchers, following a cycle of observation, reflection, and planning that affords deeper learning for the children and adults.
When teachers have a framework for examining aspects of early years knowledge and its application to their work, they can repeatedly use it to explore and clarify what they want to have happen. In this presentation, Margie will put forward her concept of a 'thinking lens' - a set questions that develop both a disposition towards reflective teaching and the skills of critical inquiry. She will share examples of American early childhood teachers using this 'thinking lens' for deeper investigations into their own, as well as the children's learning.

C# gives students a very sound basis for undertaking future courses in the IT industry. | Abstract |
The New Zealand Curriculum 2007 has a vision for young people to be creative, energetic and enterprising. They will be confident, connected, actively involved life long learners.
Key to this vision is giving students opportunities to be participants in decision making, and taking ownership of decisions that affect them and their local community. This has been the driver for the development of an Education for Enterprise Student Forum in Northland.
This workshop will be an interactive session outlining the process setting up the regional forum and its ongoing continuation. Two of the forum students will demonstrate how they utilised the trust and responsibility given to them and how they have used the knowledge and skills gained at the regional forums to lead decision making back in their own schools. Workshop participants will work with the students to identify community, business and school resources that will assist with giving students more ownership of their learning.
The success of the Student Forum has been the dedication of the students and the belief in them shown by the schools and the business partners involved. The Forum is based around the premise that all activities are student led and that all business and principal/teacher participation is in a supportive rather than a directive model. The forum has developed out of the collaboration of students, schools and the wider community. This was supported by the use of ICT tool and access to web 2.0 tools like wiki spaces to enhance the learning experience.

Applicable across the curriculum, teachers are using modern technologies imaginatively and effectively to create excitement, fun and authenticity for students. From 2010, all schools with Y7-10 students must offer quality second language learning programmes. Through the MoE funded ELL Project (e-Learning in Languages), teachers inquire into the relative benefits of using many technologies. This session will offer the opportunity to look at processes and interventions used, and many online activities and resources. Examples of improved language acquisition will include use of video (imovie and Moviemaker), digital stories (Photostory3), podcasting, Voicethread, wikis, and videoconferencing (Skype).

Are you innovative? And what does it mean anyway? Perhaps you’re highly creative, and constantly challenging yourself and others with outrageous ideas. Perhaps you are determined to create classrooms that prepare children for their future, and not their past.
Regardless of how innovative you think you are, this session will challenge you to clarify whether you are prepared to further test the limits of your thinking, and whether you have the courage to create futures that will inspire young people everywhere.
Perspectives will be offered on digital pedagogy, collective intelligence, global activism, and a series of practical possibilities for those who are indeed prepared to challenge former (and sometimes present) educational paradigms.

Articulating the underpinning values and developing a clear conceptual model of leadership for learning is fundamental to transforming practice. Leadership in the Knowledge Era implies leading for learning yet most of us grew up with leadership for management and control. Leading for learning is based on collaborative, distributed leadership. Why? What is the essence of collaborative, distributed leadership?
Note: This workshop is followed by 'Collaborative, distributed Leadership - how? when? and what then? Part 2'. It is not compulsory to do both workshops however if you intend to do Part 2 then you will need to do this workshop or have covered this ground with Julia in previous time.

Seymour Papert and Cynthia Solomon wrote a paper in 1971 called, 'Twenty Things to Do with a Computer.' Few of today's schools, with or without laptops, satisfy the goals of that thirty-five year-old document. This keynote invokes the challenging vision of the earlier document, updates it and presents ideas for using laptops in ways that offer unprecedented learning adventures across K-12 and various subject areas. The broader vision of using computers as intellectual laboratories and vehicles for self-expression is equally appropriate for educators with one or thirty computers in their classroom. The key competencies of the NZC are important to develop in students but they must first be developed in those who act as role models - leaders, teachers and other staff in the school. 'Relating to Others' must be developed on purpose... and it starts with you. This workshop will provide practical examples of how the adults in your school can be encouraged to develop strong interpersonal skills and to be aware of the effect they have on others. Competent Adults - Competent Kids will draw on elements of the key competencies of the NZC, Te Marautanga,Te Whariki and also on aspects of the Kiwi Leadership for Principals. |

A resource guide helps discover students' passions and supports them to engage in local/global connections - creating highly engaging learning experiences. This safe social networking environment gives students the opportunity to co-create learning experiences and work with others. In this way it helps students take ownership of their own learning. If you think this sounds like integrating the key competencies, yes, you are right. |

| Abstract |
Do you know where your school is at in its educational development? Do you have the tools and strategies to assist you in making decisions on where to start and where to go?
CORE Education, in collaboration with Julia Atkin, has developed a facilitation process for school review based around a central framework that acts as a 'map' to guide the process known as the Educational Positioning System. An online review tool is central to this process, enabling schools to use input from its teachers, community and students to identify where it is at in its educational development by focusing on a range of key elements that contribute to school improvement. It provides schools with the ability to:
* Understand what the educational landscape looks like and where your school is located within it;
* Establish where you would like to be;
* Have a position from which to focus future school development.
Participants will have the opportunity to use the tool online as well as engage in discussion about facilitating school self review. (Bring your laptop).

Pukerua Bay Kindergarten is involved in exploring the ways that ICT tools can add complexity to learning outcomes for children. One key outcome that has intrigued us is the powerful nature of children's own images and voices to provoke, revisit and share. This presentation looks at the use of Photostory 3 and powerpoint ebooks to promote project work learning and assessment by all the stakeholders ( teachers, children and families) . We will share examples of our journey with this, we'll have opportunities for participants to interact with samples of the children's work. |

Many teachers and schools are attempting to capitalise on the popularity of the social-networking phenomenon. There is no doubt that sites such as Facebook and Flickr, and technologies such as Twitter are highly engaging for students.
Can these technologies be used for collaborative learning? And if so, how?
This interactive presentation will challenge your perceptions and knowledge of social-networking.
It will demonstrate live examples of integrating social-networking into a Moodle site and courses.
Session attendees will be able to use social-networking to collaborate live on the site during the session.
Stuart has been actively developing this presentation over the past 18 months and it builds upon the work at previous conferences in Europe (Rome & Barcelona), the USA (Oklahoma & San Francisco), the Middle East (Muscat, Oman) and Asia-Pacific (Sydney and Brisbane). |

One of the biggest losses to the Nelson community was the move to Wellington of its home grown successful Wearable Arts. In 2008, Nayland Kindergarten children and teachers started their own annual visual art exhibition.
This workshop focuses on how children and teachers have used ICT to support the development of visual arts as a strength for Nayland Kindergarten.
An art critic commented that the children's art work was comparable to works seen in the European Art World. Exhibitions remind us of the magic way children see their world and celebrate it through the use of multimodal media. Come and share this journey with us. |

| Abstract |
Curriculum innovation and change frequently fail to realise the hopes and aspirations that initially appear possible. Schools and educational practices are locked into long standing ideologies, perceptions and views about knowledge and learning that influence perceptions and shape outcomes. What seems possible is often not realised. For future focused relevant learning to drive what happens in schools organisational and administrative restraints must courageously be removed.
There is a nonsense in many schools where the organisation and programmes are designed to accommodate teachers and their world view. Yet schools are about student achievement in solving real life problems and the measure of a schools performance should be focussed on what the students actually do.
If schools wish to “walk the talk' they must energise teachers and transform them through thinking and practice into lead learners capable of unpacking and reviewing their assumptions and modelling for their students the uncertainty of learning in a rapidly changing world

Blogging plays an important part in 21st century schools now and there is always more to learn about how to maximise blogging for student learning beyond the basics of setting one up and getting content posted.
As well as being a blogger herself, Dorothy is currently working with teachers who between them have more than a hundred blogs covering Years 1-13. Out of this experience has emerged a wealth of ideas on how to maximise the learning and teaching opportunities AND how to enhance the blog itself. This workshop will be useful not only for teachers who blog (or are thinking about blogging) but also for school leaders who would like to be informed about the process and the associated issues. We will look at practical ideas such as making your blog more visually attractive, how to attract an audience and how to use it as a collaborative tool. We will also look at some of the curly ethical and safety issues surrounding teachers and students who blog.

The change that has resulted has been as much about improving our documentation as it has been about learning to use ICT. School leaders have a key role in envisioning the potential of ICT to improve teaching and learning. Successful eLearning implementation occurs only when eLearning is an integral part of a school's vision for learning.? There needs to be cohesion across a range of elements of eLearning planning to ensure that infrastructure and resources are used to reconceptualise teaching and learning, in order to optimise the benefits of the digital age. The elements include:? eLearning Leadership?, Learning Teaching Assessment and Reporting, ?ICT Professional Learning, ?Learning Places and Spaces, ?Learning Communities and ?ICT infrastructure and Technical Support. Participants will have an opportunity to consider each element by unpacking Glen Waverly Secondary College's comprehensive eLearning plan and then reflecting on their own school settings.

In this taster session Jenny will show you some of the tools she uses to improve the oracy of her Year 1/2 students at Pt England School. With a large proportion of NESB students in her Decile 1 class, Jenny has created a fun and effective model for providing many opportunities for her students to speak and listen using 21st century tools. They use tools like Voice Thread, animoto, Capszles, Kid Pix, Flickr, and iMovie to improve their literacy outcomes. The digital learning objects these young students create are then published on on her class blog, http://littlevoiceslittlescholars.blogspot.com/
In this taster session Jenny will share with you how she ensures that the students always have opportunities to record themselves speaking (and listen to themselves over and over) when using these tools. |

Earlier this year I wrote a games programming course for my Year 10 IT elective based on Microsoft XNA and C#. XNA is the development platform for the XBOX360. Although a steep learning curve for students, their engagement was extremely high. Programming for a games console is very close to an industry experience and my students were both excited and challenged at this prospect. C# gives students a very sound basis for undertaking future courses in the IT industry. This 'hands on' session will discuss the structure of XNA and allow participants to create the beginnings of a simple game. |

For a large part of the last fifteen years I have made a very comfortable living by suppling schools with computer equipment and network support services. Three years ago I formally returned to teaching as the Director of e-Learning and Network Administrator at Howick Intermediate School. In this session I propose to share with you some of the 'tips and tricks' I have learnt to successfully manage reasonably large networks on a minimal budget. While this is not a session just for 'geeks' some of the material covered is reasonably technical, however I do have a strong reputation for being able to reduce technical concepts to a more manageable level. At the end of the session you will take away with you a CD ROM containing some of the most useful ( and free) network tools I have accumulated over the last few years. I am also happy to try and answer any questions you might have on any or all aspects of network management and infrastructure. |

Unfortunately, strategies such as the Thinkers Keys are sometimes used on a piecemeal basis, without regard for the context of their usage. Yet there are many exciting ways to implement these strategies.
In this highly practical session, you will be offered the latest update on the Keys, along with an extensive range of practical applications that place them into context with rich pedagogical experiences.
