Introduction

How Web 2.0 Technologies are Shaping Education

Web2banner2

This is an introduction to Web 2.0 to share with colleagues.

In the beginning, the Internet was mainly used to gain and access information, but the introduction of new web technologies have changed the way people behave on the Internet. The differences are:
  • Web 1.0 was the Internet as a library where you went to look up information.
  • Web 2.0 is about collaboration, connecting and learning from each other. Information as conversation. Social interaction and participation is a feature of many new technologies.
Young people all around the world are using new technologies to link and connect with each other. The challenge for educators is to prepare them for their future when many do not understand what has happened in the past (changes in new technologies in recent years) and the now.

What can you do in this online workshop?
  1. The background section provides three short video clips that introduce the concept of Web 2.0.
  2. This is followed by a presentation and article that provide examples of teachers using Web 2.0 in their teaching practice.
  3. We encourage you to explore and familiarise yourself with the participation areas.

Participation

Informal social areas (a discussion forum, wiki, and blog) have been set up so that people can socialise and network prior to and during the conference - while exploring and experimenting with these technologies. Students do not have the same fears that many adults have when exploring online environments. We therefore encourage you to 'explore' and 'play' in these areas so you might participate by asking questions and sharing in our more formal professional social areas relating to the conference themes.

It's finally beginning to resemble a truly interactive learning tool", says Stephen O'Hear, author of this short article for educators that addresses personal and collaborative publishing, folksonomy, media and devices, and content aggregation.
