Do we value education? - This timely article by Bruce Ritchie, Principal, Massey High, is based on his recent Wolf Fisher experiences in Finland.
"My experiences on a recent educational study tour to the USA, England and Finland ...lead me to question the value we place on education. ..I would like to focus on Finland as a country not much bigger than New Zealand (5.2 million) and a country which forty years ago was poor educationally and economically. However, it is now one of the stronger economies in the OECD and the top performing education nation in the world as measured by the OECD Programme of International Student Assessment (PISA). How did they do this and what can we learn?"

Stuart Middleton: Complacency kills students' dreams - "...All of this paints a foreboding picture for the 15- to 19-year-old age group. It is my view that we must focus on this level and work back down into the education system to see that young people arrive at the age of 15 equipped to continue.
This includes access to early childhood education, engagement of families in schools, secure levels of literacy and numeracy, and so on. But it also requires something more. New Zealand is the only OECD country that withdraws the entitlement to free education training from young people when they leave the compulsory school sector.
Other countries continue to provide free training for vocational education and training. It is imperative that students continue to receive free education and training regardless of where that is obtained..."

The New Zealand Curriculum: Draft 2006–2007 - Developing the draft curriculum
So far, more than 15 000 students, teachers, principals, advisers, and academics have contributed to developing the draft New Zealand curriculum, building on the recommendations from the New Zealand Curriculum Stocktake Report, published in April 2003.
People have contributed by participating in working groups, providing input online, or taking part in focus groups. The draft revision of the curriculum has been enriched by the knowledge, experience, and different perspectives of all those involved. The participatory process has also led to the creation or growth of professional communities and the forging of new connections between groups. For example, the revision of the social sciences curriculum brought together people from the disciplines of history, economics, geography, social studies, and classics.
